The Fifth Helix
by Sue McKinnell 8X32 Strathspey for 3C
Bars
1-8 6-bar mirror reels on the sides of the dance; 1C dancing in and down to begin. On the last 2 bars, 1C and 3C turn partners RH ¾ to form a line up and down the set with the women facing down and the men facing up.
9-16 1C and 3C dance a modified helix:
All set advancing to pass partners LS.
All pull RS back to dance back to place.
1M and 3W (in the center) turn RH once round.
1C and 3C turn partners LH ¾ to end in original places with 1W facing out.
17-24 1W followed by 1M cast off 1 place and dance across the set to opposite side in 2nd place. 2C step up on bars 3-4 of the phrase.
2C and 1C RH across once round.
25-32 1C and 3C dance LH across once round. 1C turn LH halfway to own sides and all set.
Repeat.
Suggested music is The Marquis of Lorne from Muckle Carfuffle.
At the 2013 Madison Ball, Lynn Litterer mentioned a figure she'd danced at a workshop earlier that day (the Helix) and asked if I could create a dance for which the name Double Helix would be appropriate. This is the fifth of several dances I came up with.
