The Tournée Squared
by Sue McKinnell 4X32 Strathspey
4 couple square dance
Bars
1-8 First and third couples dance the tournée, beginning by dancing into the center in promenade hold (in one bar) so the men end up left shoulder to left shoulder. The couples then dance the tournée, with the women ending up facing third couple’s position and the men facing first couple’s position at the end of bar four. On bars five and six first and third couples turn once round as in the tournée. On bar seven, first man follows first woman and third man follows third woman to original positions in opposite places, facing counter-clockwise around the set.
9-12 First and third couples dance counter-clockwise around the set and dance into the set, the men dancing outside second or fourth woman, as the women dance between second or fourth couple. End with third couple facing second couple, first couple facing fourth couple in lines across the dance.
13-16 All dance a half reel of four across the dance.
17-20 First and fourth, third and second couples dance half right hands across, then fourth and second couples dance half left hands across as first and third couples change places left hand on the sides.
21-24 Fourth couple dance out between third couple, fourth man dancing between third couple and fourth woman dancing out around third woman. Fourth couple cast right and dance into first position. Second couple dance similarly around first couple to end in third position. End in the order 4, 1, 2, 3.
25-32 All dance into the center, circle once round to the left, and turn over right shoulder to dance out to place.
Repeat 4 times.
Suggested music is Fill the Fetters from Celebrate 50 Years with the Boston Branch.
This dance happened when it occurred to me that a square set allows for getting into the tournée position with no turns.
